Sumaiya’s Community Mobiliser
Mukti, 24 years old
with Razina, 28, with daughter Sumaiya, 19 months
24-year-old Mukti is a Save the Children Suchana community mobiliser. Community mobilisers work within their local community to provide ongoing support and guidance on basic nutrition to mothers and children under two.
Muktha has been a community mobiliser since December 2018 and looks after 167 mothers and their families across 2.5 villages. She was trained by Save the Children’s Suchana programme on basic nutrition for mothers and babies, how to monitor a child’s height and weight, the critical importance of the first 1,000 days (from conception to two years) for a child’s development as well as basic farming techniques.
Mukthi started supporting 19-month-old Sumaiya in May 2018. On first meeting Sumaiya (then aged 15 months), Mukthi observed that something wasn’t right – Sumaiya was lethargic and quiet and wouldn’t take food. She weighed and measured her and found she was dangerously underweight.
She referred Sumaiya to a doctor for immediate treatment and continues to visit and support the family as they complete the therapeutic feeding programme.
