Suchana Program: Ending the Cycle of Undernutrition in Bangladesh

Shuhena, 25 and Israk, 21 months

21-month-old Israk is severely malnourished. A normal baby until around 10 months of age, his weight began to drop dramatically around this time and he started to refuse food.

Save the Children’s Suchana programme have been monitoring Israk since he was around 12 months. The community mobiliser in the village gave Shuhena advice and support on nutrition and food to try to get Israk’s weight to increase but to no avail. Three months ago she referred Israk to the hospital for specialist support. He was hospitalised for five days on an inpatient therapeutic feeding programme.

Since discharge, Israk’s weight has increased marginally but he is still in the danger zone. Suchana will continue to monitor and advise and refer again if necessary.
